For the First Time, South Africa’s President Calls for Unity as Ruling ANC Loses Majority
President Cyril Ramaphosa urged South Africa’s political parties to collaborate for the nation’s benefit as the final results from last week’s election confirmed that the African National Congress (ANC) had lost its majority for the first time. It is the ANC’s worst election performance since coming to power 30 years ago, symbolizing a significant shift from its previous dominance.
Voters expressed discontent over issues such as joblessness, inequality, and power outages, leading to a decrease in ANC support to 40.2%. Official results revealed that the ANC won 159 seats in the 400-seat National Assembly, down from its previous 230 seats.
This outcome necessitates power-sharing with a major political rival to maintain control, marking an unprecedented development in post-apartheid South Africa.
After the electoral commission announced the final results, Mr. Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of finding common ground and working together for the nation’s well-being. He hailed the election as a triumph for democracy.
He highlighted the need for all political parties to prioritize South Africa’s interests. With two weeks to negotiate before the new parliament convenes to elect a president, the ANC is likely to retain power with Mr. Ramaphosa as the leading candidate.
The ANC acknowledged the election outcome with humility and expressed commitment to forming a stable and effective government. There are concerns about Mr. Ramaphosa’s future, but the party remains steadfast in its support for him and its dedication to governance.
As the ANC leadership strategizes the way forward, influential groups like COSATU stand behind Ramaphosa to lead a coalition and ensure stability. However, the possibility of an alliance with parties like EFF or MK has raised concerns among business sectors and investors.
‘Doomsday Coalition’
The ANC’s historical election domination faced a challenge as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) made significant strides in this election. The prospect of a coalition with the ANC, EFF, or MK has sparked debate and uncertainty within the political landscape.
As discussions ensue to form alliances, various parties like the DA and IFP consider their next steps to secure a stable government. The ANC’s decision to collaborate with potential partners will shape the future of South Africa’s political landscape.
