Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro undergoes a new surgery to address bowel obstruction
SAO PAULO—Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently undergoing a new surgery Sunday morning in Brasilia, as confirmed by his doctors.
The conservative leader has been in the hospital since Friday due to a bowel obstruction resulting from the lasting effects of a stabbing incident in September 2018. Doctors at the DF Star Hospital have determined that surgery is necessary to remove intestinal adhesions and reconstruct the abdominal wall, based on new imaging exams.
Since the attack at a campaign event before the 2018 presidential election, Bolsonaro has been in and out of hospitals and underwent multiple surgeries during his presidency from 2019-2022.
After being admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz on Friday and subsequently transferred to a hospital in Natal, Bolsonaro’s family requested his transfer to Brasilia on Saturday, as reported by doctors.
Bolsonaro had plans to embark on a trip across the Northeastern region to promote his party’s right-wing agenda, in preparation for next year’s presidential election, despite being ineligible to run himself. This region has historically been a stronghold of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
