Former soldier to run against Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles in upcoming election
Veteran Jon Metrikas, buoyed by the recent Werribee by-election, has decided to take on Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles for the seat of Corio. Inspired by the significant swing against Labor in Werribee, former soldier turned business manager Metrikas is eager to challenge Marles, the current defence minister.
The Werribee by-election saw a close race with Liberal candidate Steve Murphy making significant gains, indicating dissatisfaction with the incumbent Labor government. Metrikas, now announcing his candidacy for the federal electorate of Corio, hopes to bring attention to the lack of federal support for the area.
Metrikas recognizes the challenge ahead, as Corio has long been a safe Labor seat with a margin of about 19 percent. Despite the tough battle ahead, he is determined to represent Geelong and the surrounding area at the federal level.
Metrikas plans to focus on issues such as reducing crime, easing cost-of-living pressures, and advocating for better outcomes for the defense force if elected. He believes that change is necessary in Corio, drawing from his own experience as a candidate in the Greater Geelong City Council elections last year.
The electorate of Corio, located near Werribee and encompassing the industrial city of Geelong, has been a traditional Labor stronghold for decades. However, recent by-election results in Werribee indicate a shifting sentiment with cost of living and crime emerging as key concerns.
Metrikas emphasizes the importance of instilling a strong work ethic in youth to combat crime and create productive community members. Drawing from his family’s migrant background and personal experiences, he aims to bring change and support the local community if elected.
Metrikas also calls for a stronger stance towards the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and increased investment in defense and national security. He highlights the need to prioritize local interests over foreign aid and ensure that taxpayer money is spent wisely.
