Freeland and Gould, Liberal Leadership Contenders, Pledge to Eliminate Increase in Capital Gains Tax
Both Karina Gould and Chrystia Freeland, contenders for the Liberal leadership, have committed to eliminating the capital gains tax increase if elected as party leader.
Chrystia Freeland, former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, discussed her plans regarding capital gains during a press scrum on Jan. 23, emphasizing the need for changes in response to global shifts, including the election of U.S. President Donald Trump.
She highlighted the importance of adjusting policies to attract foreign investments following Trump’s approach, stating, “We must make a lot of changes to be ready to succeed when the time comes.”
Meanwhile, the proposed capital gains exclusion rate increase was not approved by the House of Commons, but the Canada Revenue Agency still plans to administer the tax at a higher rate.
