Getting to Know Andrew Bevan: The New Liberal Campaign Director
Andrew Bevan has been tasked with leading the federal Liberals’ upcoming electoral campaign, amidst setbacks and internal turmoil against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Recently, Bevan served as chief of staff to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, as well as a senior advisor to Trudeau, although he remains less visible to the public compared to Katie Telford, Trudeau’s chief of staff.
The budget emphasizes expanding the housing supply, introducing new aid programs for dental care and pharmacare, and forecasts a $40 billion deficit. It also proposes an increase in the capital gains tax to generate additional government revenue, emphasizing the need for the wealthy to contribute their fair share.
“Liberals nationwide are prepared to defend our progress, drive economic growth that benefits all, and oppose Conservative reductions in essential programs and services,” Bevan commented in an Oct. 13 news release. “We will craft a winning campaign to re-elect Justin Trudeau and more Liberal MPs, continuing to move Canada forward.”
Series of Setbacks
The Conservatives, with their focus on eliminating the carbon tax, currently lead significantly in the polls against the Liberals. The latest Abacus poll shows Conservatives at 43 percent of voting intention, compared to 22 percent for the Liberals and 19 percent for the NDP.
