Gippsland Supports the Greyhound Track Despite Ethical Concerns Raised by Animal Welfare Groups

A controversy has arisen in Sale as animal welfare activists express opposition to a new track proposal, while the industry stands by its plans.

Recent announcements by Sale Greyhound Racing Club regarding the development of a race-capable “straight track” in Kilmany have sparked concerns among Victorian greyhound racing figures.

The club’s acquisition of a plot of land earlier in the year has set the stage for a trial-ready track within three years.

Straight tracks, which differ from traditional circular ones, are considered safer for greyhounds as they eliminate the need to navigate bends during races. There are currently only three such tracks in Australia.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has publicly backed the club’s initiative, commending their strategic vision and plans for the new track.

On the other hand, the proposal has faced criticism from the Animal Justice Party (AJP) branch in Victoria, who assert that the industry’s social and financial standing is in jeopardy.

The AJP has raised concerns about the welfare of greyhounds in the industry and questions the ethical implications of expanding such operations.

Despite opposition, Sale Greyhound Racing Club remains determined to move ahead with the project, with CEO Adrian Scott emphasizing the potential benefits for the region.

Responding to claims of financial trouble within the industry, GRV has defended its position and highlighted its contributions to the economy and employment in Victoria.

Local committee member Dawn Johnston expressed optimism about the Kilmany facility, highlighting its community focus and the positive impact it could have on the area.

Industry figures have pushed back against criticism regarding injury rates and the welfare of greyhounds, citing ongoing efforts to prevent race-related injuries and promote adoption programs.

Despite the controversy, supporters of the project believe in the potential of the new track to enhance the industry and benefit the community.
