Government Allocates £500 Million for Tata Steel’s Transition to Sustainable Practices
Approximately 2,800 job losses are still expected at Port Talbot, with GMB union leader Gary Smith emphasizing the need to stop decarbonisation through de-industrialisation in the UK.
The government has reached an agreement with Tata Steel to safeguard some jobs as the Port Talbot plant transitions to a low-carbon steel production system.
Agreed upon by Tata Steel’s Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and senior Cabinet members, the deal also includes a minimum compulsory redundancy payout of £15,000, a £5,000 “retention” payment, and offers of paid-for training.
Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated, “Port Talbot has always been and will always be a steelmaking town. This deal achieves what previous agreements failed to do – provide hope for the future of steelmaking in South Wales.”
Reynolds further added, “We understand that a cleaner, greener future for UK steelmaking is essential for the industry’s long-term economic stability. While challenges lie ahead, our steel strategy outlines a positive vision for the industry’s future, supported by our manifesto commitment of £3 billion government investment.”
Earlier this year, Tata Steel announced a decarbonisation plan for the Welsh plant, involving the closure of its blast furnaces and transitioning to an electric arc furnace (EAF) system that produces steel from scrap.

Once the second blast furnace in Port Talbot is closed by the end of this month, the UK will be the only developed country unable to produce steel from raw materials.
Redundancies Anticipated
Despite the efforts to protect around 5,000 jobs nationwide, approximately 2,800 individuals are expected to lose their jobs at the plant following the closure of the last blast furnace, as the EAF system construction will take time and require fewer workers upon completion.
The government has secured a £15,000 minimum compulsory redundancy package to support the Port Talbot community, along with a voluntary redundancy deal that offers 2.8 weeks’ earnings per year of service, capped at 25 years, for those opting for redundancy.
Tata Steel has also committed to offering a comprehensive training program for at-risk employees, ensuring full pay for the first month and £27,000 annually for the subsequent 11 months during the training period.
The company states that at least 500 new jobs will be created to assist in the EAF construction, which is projected to be operational within three years.
“We eagerly anticipate the successful and prompt execution of the EAF project. We will continue collaborating with the Transition Board and the UK/Welsh governments to make this project a catalyst for economic reinvigoration and job creation in South Wales,” Narendran remarked.
De-Industrialisation for Net Zero
Although the trade unions have agreed to this deal, not all leaders are content with the impact of the net zero agenda on British industry.
Gary Smith, the GMB union leader, expressed concern about the upcoming job losses and urged a halt to decarbonisation through de-industrialisation.
He emphasized the significance of maintaining steel-making capabilities in the UK to prevent reliance on steel imports from countries like China, which predominantly use coal in their production processes.
Smith called for a transparent discussion on the ramifications of environmental policy on employment, emphasizing the need to address the consequences for workers and communities affected by decarbonisation efforts.
