Government Announces Plans for New Regulations on Gambling Advertising

Despite ongoing pressure from Parliament and community groups, the Albanese government has not committed to a complete ban on gambling advertising.

During a parliamentary session on Aug. 13, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged that the current level of gambling advertising, especially its exposure to children, is unsustainable.

He mentioned that the communications and social services ministers are actively working on a comprehensive strategy to address gambling advertising issues.

Albanese emphasized the importance of ensuring that any measures taken do not have unintended consequences, recognizing the complexity of the issue.

He also mentioned ongoing consultations on a proposed model for regulating online advertisements.

Stakeholders are sharing their perspectives, and the government is committed to consulting in an organized manner, following proper processes.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland outlined three key priorities for the government.

She highlighted the need to address the normalization of sports betting, reduce children’s exposure to advertising, and mitigate the overwhelming presence of ads, especially online and targeting vulnerable groups like young men aged 18 to 45.

Rowland also refuted claims that she had met with gambling executives numerous times, asserting that she had not engaged in such meetings.

Health Minister Mark Butler raised concerns about the impact of online gambling ads on mental health.

He emphasized that while gambling can be harmless in moderation, excessive gambling can result in severe mental health issues.

Butler stated that problem gambling is now recognized as a mental illness, and the government has implemented measures to prevent and reduce harm.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform, composed of prominent figures like former state Premiers and Prime Ministers, sent a letter urging action on gambling advertising to Prime Minister Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
