Hamilton Debuts Remembrance Day Crosswalk in Tribute to Veterans
The City of Hamilton has unveiled its inaugural Remembrance Day crosswalk in partnership with local veterans.
Christopher Redford, the city’s heritage presentation coordinator, explained in an interview with The Epoch Times that they considered multiple designs before settling on one. The crosswalk features red and white stripes, a soldier silhouette at each end, and the words “Lest we forget” in black.
Redford expressed his hope that the crosswalk would serve as a frequent reminder of veterans’ sacrifices.
He noted, “People tend to take notice because it’s a small way to remember at locations where cenotaphs are present.”
Feedback from the public regarding the crosswalk design has been positive, with individuals even commenting on social media after seeing images of it from as far as Vancouver.
The crosswalk will play a significant role in this year’s local Remembrance Day ceremony, according to Redford.
Before the Remembrance Day ceremony in Stoney Creek, the Legion will hold a dedication event at the crosswalk. Attendees will gather on the crosswalk for a moment of reflection.
Redford mentioned that the design is directly painted on the street and will be repainted when necessary.
He also suggested that this could be the first of many such tributes in the community.
Considering the seven different Remembrance Day ceremonies held at various cenotaphs in Hamilton, Redford believes the potential for additional crosswalks is significant. He concluded, “For now, we’re delighted that this project has come to fruition, and we’ll wait to see what the future holds.”
Hamilton isn’t the only Ontario municipality adopting this form of Remembrance Day commemoration. Chatham-Kent, too, introduced a painted crosswalk to honor veterans during this year’s ceremonies.
The post highlighted, “This crosswalk is painted to commemorate those who have served, are currently serving, and those who made sacrifices for our nation.”
The post reiterated, “As we approach Remembrance Day, we continue to show our support for the veterans of Chatham-Kent, past, present, and future.”
The municipality disclosed its plans to unveil more Remembrance Day-themed crosswalks in the near future.
