Heads of 40 Nations to Convene at BRICS Summit to Address Escalating Middle Eastern Tensions

Discussions on mounting tensions in the Middle East will involve representatives from around 40 countries on the final day of the 16th annual BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.

The geopolitical bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) held its first formal summit in 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. South Africa joined in 2010, forming BRICS. The organization has now expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

According to a 2023 BRICS publication, the bloc represents 41 percent of the world’s population, 20 percent of the world’s GDP, and over 16 percent of world trade.

The publication declares that “BRICS countries have been the main engines of global economic growth over the years.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin will engage with world leaders during the summit taking place from October 22 to October 24.

Per a Kremlin statement, the summit’s theme is “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.”

BRICS leaders will discuss politics and security, economy and finance, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties during the summit.

A Kremlin spokesperson mentioned that “Particular attention will be given to the potential expansion of BRICS through the proposed establishment of a new category of ‘partner nations.'”

The Kazan Summit Declaration will summarise the outcomes of these discussions.

On the final day of the summit, BRICS Plus/Outreach will commence with representatives, including heads of international organizations like the Commonwealth of Independent States, participating.

The Kremlin stated that “Discussions will focus on pressing international issues, specifically the escalating situation in the Middle East and interactions between BRICS countries and the Global South to foster sustainable development.”

On October 18, Putin met with journalists from BRICS countries to address the group’s role on the global stage amidst rapid changes and the opportunities these changes present for BRICS.

Putin noted that while countries like China, India, Russia, and Saudi Arabia are expected to see positive growth, Southeast Asian and African nations will demonstrate even higher growth rates.

He emphasized that “Expanding economic potential of BRICS countries like China, India, Brazil, and South Africa will enhance their global influence.”
