Health Canada Recalls Over 16,000 Children’s Jewelry Items Due to Excessive Lead Levels
Health Canada has issued a recall for thousands of kids’ jewelry items due to excessive lead levels. Consumers should promptly dispose of two specific pieces sold on Amazon.ca that were manufactured in China.
According to Health Canada, “Under the Children’s Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items aimed primarily at children under 15 years that contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead.”
Amazon indicated that 6,682 units of this necklace were sold in Canada between May 2023 and March 2025.
Health Canada determined that lead levels beyond acceptable limits were present in the kit through its sampling and evaluation program.
Amazon stated that 9,800 units of this product were sold in Canada between August 2023 and April 2025.
Health Canada advises anyone who has bought these items to remove them from their homes without delay.
“Consumers who own these affected products should immediately keep the jewelry away from children and dispose of them according to local hazardous waste disposal guidelines,” Health Canada emphasized.
To date, no incidents or injuries related to either product have been reported to Health Canada. Both products have been removed from Amazon’s sales platform, and Health Canada has contacted the foreign third-party sellers involved.
The agency noted that lead has a sweet taste, which may tempt children to chew, suck, or accidentally swallow jewelry containing lead. A superficial coating does not guarantee safety, as it can easily be chewed or worn off.
“Exposure to lead and cadmium has been linked to a range of serious health effects including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, severe brain injury, seizures, coma, as well as adverse effects on the liver, kidneys, heart, and immune system,” Health Canada cautioned. “In extreme cases, fatalities have occurred.”
