Health Minister Aims for Universal Access to Health Professionals for All Quebecers by 2026
The Quebec government is aiming to ensure that every Quebecer has access to a health professional by the summer of 2026, right before the next provincial election.
Health Minister Christian Dubé revealed this goal in Quebec City as part of his efforts to enhance Quebecers’ access to healthcare.
Although Quebec Premier François Legault initially promised that all Quebecers would have a family doctor in 2018, the government later acknowledged that this would not be feasible. As a result, they are now focusing on improving access to a wider range of health professionals, including nurse practitioners.
According to the province’s statistics agency, the percentage of Quebecers with access to a family doctor decreased from 82% in 2019 to 73% in 2023.
Dubé admitted that improving Quebec’s healthcare system has been more challenging than anticipated when he assumed the role in 2020.
The minister also announced plans to introduce legislation that would mandate new doctors trained in Quebec to work in the province’s public system for a specific number of years after graduation.
