Historic Toronto Church Suffers Devastating Fire, Damaging Group of Seven Artworks
A four-alarm fire tore through St. Anne’s Anglican Church in Toronto on Sunday morning, causing significant damage to a national historic site that showcased murals by the Group of Seven.
Authorities reported that the fire started just before 8 a.m., eventually engulfing the domed roof of the Byzantine-style structure.
No individuals were inside the 124-year-old church located in the Little Portugal neighborhood, and luckily, there were no injuries reported.
The church housed early paintings by three Group of Seven artists dating back to the 1920s.
Deepak Chagger, spokesman for Toronto Fire Services, mentioned that it seems unlikely that any items were salvaged, although the loss of the iconic artworks has not been officially confirmed.
Authorities have confirmed that the main fire has been extinguished.
