Hogue Commission Orders First-Hand Accounts of Beijing’s Interference With Politicians to be Sealed for 99 Years
The Hogue Commission has decided that evidence from two secret witnesses with direct knowledge of China’s interference in Canada’s democracy will be recorded through affidavits. The information will be sealed, with only summaries released to the public.
One witness, known as “Person B,” provided insight into how the People’s Republic of China co-opts and leverages some Chinese Canadian community associations and politicians. The information shared was based on both first-hand and second-hand accounts.
Person B expressed concerns about potential repercussions if their identity is exposed due to infiltration by the United Front Work Department in Chinese Canadian community organizations.
Another witness, “Person C,” also provided first-hand information on foreign interference activities by China and expressed concerns about potential retaliation.
If Person B and C present their evidence in affidavits, the records will be sealed for 99 years for security reasons.
