Home Office Diverts Manpower from Rwanda Scheme to Target Car Washes and Nail Bars in Raids

Yvette Cooper stated that she had shifted 1,000 employees previously involved in the Rwanda program to a new immigration enforcement initiative.

Immigration raids will now target car washes and beauty salons, while 1,000 civil servants who were working on the Rwanda deportation plan have been reassigned, according to the home secretary.

Yvette Cooper mentioned that personnel have been relocated to a new Returns and Enforcement program, aimed at “increasing the return of individuals without legal status and ensuring that regulations are adhered to and enforced, starting with a rise in illegal working crackdowns.”

In an article featured in The Sun on Sunday, the home secretary stated that immigration enforcement has been instructed to intensify raids throughout the summer, focusing on “employers who are supporting criminal activities by exploiting and assisting illegal labor in the UK—including in car washes and the beauty industry.”

Ms. Cooper also indicated that the government is developing strategies to expedite asylum verdicts and deportations to secure countries.

The Labour party has prioritized border security in its governance and has begun implementing the Border Security Command as promised in its manifesto.

In her publication, Ms. Cooper mentioned that the command has enlisted numerous new cross-border police, investigators, and prosecutors to combat smuggling rings in the UK and across Europe.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer used the recent European Political Community summit to discuss illegal migration with other European leaders, hinting at potential offshore processing arrangements akin to the Italy-Albania agreement.

However, Conservatives have criticized him for terminating the Rwanda scheme on his first day in office, claiming that it served as a necessary deterrent for individuals attempting to make the crossing.

Ms. Cooper acknowledged in her publication that addressing small boat migrations will require time.

She commented, “We have received a challenging summer with a considerable increase in channel crossings this year, and we are aware that resolving this issue will necessitate persistent efforts rather than quick fixes.”

Since Labour assumed power, the Home Office has recorded 2,143 instances of illegal immigrants crossing the English Channel.

As of Saturday, the number of small boat arrivals this year has reached 15,717, marking a 9% increase compared to the same period last year and nearly 3% above the previous record achieved in 2022.

Tragically, the channel crossings have resulted in fatalities, with two deaths reported last week and four deaths the week prior.
