House Committee Investigates Acquisition of $9M Canadian Condo in NYC
A House of Commons committee will investigate the Liberal government’s recent purchase of a $9-million condo in Manhattan for its consul general to New York.
On July 24, the government operations and estimates committee unanimously agreed to hold meetings next month to look into the purchase.
The committee has requested Global Affairs Canada to provide a list of properties, addresses, and prices considered for the consul general’s residence in New York.
Witnesses to be called include Tom Clark, consul general to New York, the deputy minister of Global Affairs, representatives from the Procurement Department and Treasury Board, and a panel of New York City real estate agents.
If necessary, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly will also be asked to testify.
Global Affairs stated that the previous residence purchased in 1961 was not up to code, prompting the new condo purchase.
