Human Rights Group Urges Canada to Stand with US in Recognizing Genocide in Sudan
A notable human rights organization is urging Ottawa to emulate the U.S. and declare the recent actions of Sudan’s paramilitary force as genocide.
The Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights has accused the Rapid Support Forces of perpetrating genocide in the Darfur region several months ago, amidst Sudan’s violent civil war.
In April, the advocacy group published a comprehensive report alleging that Sudan’s paramilitary force had been targeting specific ethnic groups while utilizing weapons from the United Arab Emirates.
On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared that the Rapid Support Forces are engaging in genocide by deliberately targeting civilians for murder and rape based on their ethnicity.
The U.S. has enforced sanctions on the group and on companies in the United Arab Emirates that are accused of supplying arms to the group.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has yet to provide a statement on whether Sudan is committing genocide.
Canada did participate in a joint statement with the U.S. and four other countries today, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the peace deal that led to the secession of South Sudan, now an independent nation.
