Human Rights Watch Urges Australia to Improve Support for Unjustly Detained Citizens Abroad

Human Rights Watch stated that Australia’s current lack of a system to identify cases of wrongful detention hinders wrongfully detained victims from receiving necessary support from the government.

A global human rights organisation highlighted the absence of a system in Australia to identify instances of its citizens being wrongfully detained.

Daniela Gavshon, Australian Director of Human Rights Watch (HRW), raised these concerns during a Senate inquiry hearing on Sept. 26.

Gavshon acknowledged the uniqueness of each case while emphasizing the need for improvement in several areas.

She noted, “Over the years, we found that one of the major barriers … is the lack of a system to immediately identify these cases.” She added, “In the first instance, they’re treated as ordinary consular cases.”

The director also mentioned the absence of clear processes to escalate identified cases for appropriate handling.
