Hurricane Beryl Targets Yucatan Peninsula, Heading towards Southeast Texas
The Caribbean islands are recovering from the impact of Hurricane Beryl, while Texas is gearing up for preparations.
Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula southeast of Cancun in the early morning of July 5. The latest forecasts suggest it will turn north and head towards Texas.
Sections of the Yucatan coast, including popular spots like Cancun and Cozumel, are under a hurricane warning. A watch is in effect for the coastline south of Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal and north of Cancun to Campeche.
Tropical storm warnings also remain in place for other parts of the peninsula.
Storm surge could raise water levels by four to six feet in onshore areas, with dangerous surf expected as well.
The NHC projects rainfall amounts of four to six inches with isolated incidents of up to 10 inches, leading to potential flash flooding in Mexico and Texas.
Texas Bound
Once in the Gulf of Mexico, the NHC is projecting that the storm will head towards Texas. Brownsville and SpaceX’s Starbase at Boca Chica are currently in the predicted path.
The storm is anticipated to make landfall by early morning on July 8.
On July 4, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott instructed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to elevate the readiness level of the emergency operations center to level two and to start preparing state emergency response resources for potential deployment.
Gov. Abbott emphasized the importance of emergency planning and monitoring of weather conditions as Hurricane Beryl approaches.
The last significant hurricanes to hit the region were Hurricane Alex in 2010 and Hurricane Dolly in 2008, causing extensive damage.
The Epoch Times has reached out to SpaceX for information on their storm preparedness plans.
Jamaica, Windward Islands Begin Recovery
Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm as it passed through the southern Caribbean, affecting the Windward Islands, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands.
Reports indicate seven fatalities across the Caribbean, severe damage to properties, and disruptions to daily life.
Efforts are underway to assess the damage and support recovery in the impacted areas.
