Illegal Dumping: Quebec Conducting Soil Sample Tests on Trucks En Route to Kanesatake
Quebec’s Environment Department is currently conducting soil samples from trucks en route to the Mohawk community of Kanesatake in an effort to combat illegal dumping in the area.
This operation is being carried out in collaboration with provincial police and is part of an “action plan” to decrease the dumping of contaminated soil in the territory west of Montreal.
Last week, officials visited Kanesatake to inspect sites and gather soil samples along the shores of the Lake of Two Mountains, where residents have reported ongoing illegal dumping for years.
A spokesperson from the Environment Department mentioned that these samples are undergoing analysis, and officials may inspect more trucks in the future.
The fines for illegal dumping could be up to $1 million for an individual and $6 million for a company.
A group in the neighboring town of Oka is organizing a training session on Sunday to educate residents on how to conduct road checks on trucks heading to Kanesatake, aiming to pressure the Quebec government to take more action against the issue.
