Immigration Court Rules: People Smugglers and Suspected Terrorists to be Dealt with Equally
Senior judges have upheld a decision to revoke the British citizenship of two Afghan nationals accused of people smuggling. The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) ruled that people smugglers should be treated the same as terror suspects. The individuals had their citizenship revoked after the National Crime Agency (NCA) accused them of smuggling vulnerable adults and children into the UK for sexual exploitation and modern slavery. The court rejected an appeal by the suspected ringleaders, who argued that previous guidance from the Supreme Court in the case of Shamima Begum should not apply to their cases. The SIAC judges disagreed, stating that the decision to revoke citizenship based on public good applies to cases involving serious organised crime as well, not just national security concerns.
