Immigration Minister Commits to Carry Out Rwanda Deportation Plan
Robert Jenrick said that the boats can’t be stopped without the deterrence policy and also called for a reduction in legal migration. He vowed to do “whatever it takes” to push through the plan to deport illegal immigrants to Rwanda, even if the Supreme Court rules against the policy on Wednesday. This happened during his interview with The Telegraph during his visit to Bulgaria on Monday, hours after the Cabinet reshuffle. In a statement, Mr. Jenrick referenced the government’s goals to stop the boats “in their entirety” before the next general election, but also highlighted that the goal cannot be achieved without the Rwanda policy. In response to potential defeat in the Supreme Court, Mr. Jenrick said that there will be no further steps to be taken by the government and that the Rwanda policy will succeed, “no ifs, no buts.” He expressed confidence that the new home secretary “shares our belief that we have to stop the boats.” The minister emphasized the essential role of the Rwanda policy, explaining that without it, “you have to inject a major deterrent into the system, and you have to get the flights off.”
He addressed the UK’s post-Brexit system for legal migration, noting that the Conservative governments have “betrayed the promise” to reduce migration. Mr. Jenrick said there is an urgent need for fundamental reform of the migration system. He criticized that “Net migration is far too high” and stressed that a reform needs to happen as a matter of urgency.
The Conservative government, under Boris Johnson, established a “point-based” immigration system after Brexit to “take back control” of Britain’s borders. After international borders reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic, the UK’s net migration hit record highs. The Epoch Times has reached out to the Home Office for comments.
