Impact of Netherlands’ Rightward Shift on Western Aid to Ukraine is Likely
Geert Wilders’ victory in parliamentary elections prompts concern over Dutch support for Ukraine
Following the surprise electoral win of Geert Wilders’ right-wing Freedom Party (PVV) in the Netherlands, concerns have been raised that the country’s stance may align more closely with that of Hungary and Slovakia with regards to Ukraine.
Mr. Wilders’ party has expressed opposition to certain EU policies, particularly related to immigration, as well as to admitting Ukraine, Moldova, and some Balkan states into the EU.
Furthermore, the PVV intends to significantly reduce Dutch assistance to Ukraine, both financially and militarily.
Despite this, there is hope expressed by the country’s defense minister that ongoing Dutch support for Ukraine will be maintained even under a PVV-led government.
Coalition talks are now underway, with the PVV negotiating with other Dutch political parties to form a ruling coalition. It remains to be seen how their stance on Ukraine will be moderated in the process.
Meanwhile, officials in Kyiv and Moscow have yet to comment on Mr. Wilders’ electoral victory.
Should Mr. Wilders assume the Dutch premiership, he is likely to work on blocking additional EU funding for Ukraine’s war effort.
