Increase in Australians Facing Difficulty with Energy Bill Payments
Statistics from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) show an increase in the number of people struggling with debt to their energy suppliers compared to the previous year. The proportion of customers on hardship programs has risen, with average debts upon entry also increasing for both electricity and gas customers.
While the percentage of residential customers with energy debt over 90 days remains stable, concerns have been raised about customers not receiving necessary assistance. It is important for individuals facing energy bill difficulties to reach out to their retailer promptly.
The AER emphasized the importance of effective support for vulnerable energy consumers, particularly low-income households who are spending a smaller portion of their annual income on energy bills. The report also highlights gradual improvements in market competition as more consumers shift to smaller retailers.
Proposals for reforms, including enhancing concession systems and supporting customers in hardship programs, have been presented to Energy Ministers. These reforms aim to provide better support and assistance to consumers facing financial hardships related to energy costs.
