Increased Police Presence to Continue as Football League Resumes

Thousands of additional officers will be deployed to football matches as a minister urges counter-protesters to stay home to prevent a strain on police resources.

The government has announced that an increased police presence will be in effect this weekend, especially with the English Football League resuming matches on Friday evening and potential disorder following recent riots in the UK.

A minister has advised those considering participating in counter-demonstrations to avoid adding pressure on police resources, especially with 36 EFL matches scheduled over the weekend.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, along with Deputy Commissioner Dame Lynne Owens, met with police officers at the Metropolitan Police’s specialist operations room in Lambeth to discuss the force’s strategy.

‘Strong Police Presence’

When asked by the BBC about the presence of 16,000 police officers in the capital over the weekend, Cooper confirmed that there will be additional officers ready to respond.

With concerns of disorder escalating due to false social media posts, police have been on high alert to prevent any potential anti-immigration protests. Counter-protests have also been organized with a significant police presence in various areas.

Cooper emphasized the importance of expedited arrests, convictions, and sentencing, in addition to the extra officers on the streets, to deter criminal activities and maintain order.

Woman Arrested For Sharing ‘Fake News’

Police have apprehended a 55-year-old woman for sharing false information on social media regarding a murder case. Meanwhile, a teenager was charged with multiple counts of murder following an attack in July.

Cooper mentioned ongoing efforts by the police to identify individuals involved in violence using CCTV footage and facial recognition technology.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed confidence in the police’s preparedness for the weekend and emphasized the importance of safety and security for communities.

‘Swift Justice’

He highlighted the impact of the heightened police presence and swift justice in deterring potential rioters and ensuring community safety.

Over 480 individuals have been arrested in relation to disorder across England, with some facing prison sentences.

The football matches are set to begin, with increased security measures in place to ensure the safety of spectators and communities.
