Individual Connected to Controversial New Zealand Church Leader Paints Over Rainbow Crossing
The iconic crossing on Karanghape, affectionately known as ‘K’ Road, was washed over in white paint on March 28, sparking outrage within the LGBT community.
An individual from Auckland, with ties to a controversial pastor, admitted to vandalizing the LGBT-themed pedestrian crossing in the city’s CBD.
“We aim to embrace our rainbow community and ensure that everyone in New Zealand can freely be themselves in this country—and I have no tolerance for such actions,” stated Prime Minister Chris Luxon.
31-year-old Ford O’Connor, a father of four, appeared in court and pleaded guilty to intentionally damaging the crossing. He accepted to pay $16,093 for the removal of paint and repair of the crossing, leading to a discharge without conviction.
Mr. O’Connor is married to the eldest granddaughter of Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki, a polarizing figure known for his controversial statements and political movement.
Mr. Tamaki has been vocal against LGBT rights, COVID mandates, and initiatives like Drag Story Time, which he views as a threat to children’s innocence.
Despite a similar incident in Gisborne where Destiny Church members painted over a rainbow crossing, Mr. Tamaki denied any knowledge of the K’ Road incident’s responsible party.
Outside the court, Mr. Tamaki offered support to Mr. O’Connor and criticized what he perceives as government overpromotion of LGBT rights.
The K’ Road community, which has a strong LGBTQ legacy, expressed disappointment over the vandalism, emphasizing the importance of visibility and pride for the rainbow community.
Karangahape Road Business Association reiterated that everyone should feel safe and welcome on K’ Road, emphasizing the crossing’s significance as a place of belonging for the rainbow community.
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown condemned the act as disgraceful and intolerant, highlighting the need to repair the damage caused by the vandalism.
