Introducing a Bill to Rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America: Rep. Greene’s Proposal

Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a bill to make this change, stating that all references to the Gulf of Mexico in U.S. laws and documents would be changed to Gulf of America if the bill is passed.

If enacted, the Department of Interior would oversee the implementation of the new name within 180 days of the bill becoming law. Despite Trump’s enthusiasm for the new name, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested renaming the United States to “America Mexicana” in response.

The Gulf of Mexico is known as America’s “Third Coast” and has a Spanish name, “El Golfo de México.” If Trump proceeds to rename it unilaterally, it would not be the first time a president has renamed a landmark. For example, in 2012, President Obama changed Alaska’s Mount McKinley to Denali, a move Trump has vowed to reverse.

In addition to the Gulf of Mexico renaming idea, Trump has made controversial statements about acquiring the Panama Canal, Greenland, and making Canada the 51st state. Rep. Dusty Johnson introduced a bill to authorize negotiations with Panama to regain control of the canal, which the U.S. ceded in 1999 through a treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977.
