Investigation Launched Into Incident Involving Tory MP Mark Menzies Resulting in Whip Loss
The Tory MP representing Fylde in Lancashire has voluntarily stepped down from the party amidst an ongoing investigation into allegations made by a staff member.
An investigation has been initiated into accusations published in a national newspaper of a Conservative MP misusing campaign funds, leading to the suspension of their party membership.
The newspaper revealed that the amount initially requested by Mr. Menzies escalated to £6,500, which was eventually paid by his office manager from personal funds, later reimbursed with contributions from party supporters.
Mr. Menzies, who had a substantial majority in the last election, has refuted the allegations, prompting the Conservative Party to launch an investigation.
A spokesperson for the party stated that Mr. Menzies had agreed to temporarily relinquish the Conservative whip pending the investigation’s conclusion.
The 52-year-old, who will now serve as an independent MP, faces uncertainty regarding his candidacy in the upcoming general election preceding January 2025.
