Iran’s Missile Attack on Israel: A Comprehensive Overview
Iran launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel overnight, prompting citizens to take cover as sirens blared in cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
On Tuesday night, Iran fired hundreds of missiles towards Israel, with some hitting the country’s territory in the second attack of its kind this year.
Israel’s military has reported that the attacks have stopped for now and there is currently no further threat from Iran. The extent of damage from the overnight barrage is still unknown, and there have been no reported deaths from the attacks.
Recent Israeli airstrikes against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in Lebanon and a limited ground incursion in southern Lebanon led to Iran’s retaliation. They cited the killing of top commanders in the region as justification for the attack.
The attack consisted of around 180 missiles from Iran, a higher number compared to their previous assault in April. While most missiles were intercepted by Israel’s defense systems, Iran claimed a significant percentage hit their targets. The Iron Dome is Israel’s well-known missile defense system, along with other defenses like David’s Sling and Arrow interceptors.
The United States and its allies assisted Israel in countering the Iranian assault. President Biden labeled Iran’s attack as thwarted and ordered support for Israel in defense against Iranian missiles. Other countries including the UK and France also supported Israel in response to the attack.
Many international allies of Israel have condemned Iran’s actions and expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defense. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Iran will face consequences for the attack, while the IDF has plans for further action if necessary. The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting to address the escalating conflict.
