Iraq’s Kurdish Region Allegedly Committed to Disarming Militant Groups, According to Tehran
According to the Iranian foreign ministry, Iran and Iraq have signed an agreement to disarm militant groups in Baghdad’s autonomous Kurdish region. The agreement requires Iraq to close the bases of separatists and terrorist groups in its territory and relocate them. The terms of the agreement must be implemented by September 19. If Iraq fails to fulfill its obligations, Iran will take action to protect its interests. A spokesperson for the ministry stated that the presence of terrorists in the Kurdish region has negatively affected bilateral relations between Iran and Iraq. An Iraqi official confirmed that the agreement has been signed by both countries. Tehran has accused the Kurdish region of harboring militant groups that have conducted cross-border attacks and attempted to incite unrest in Iran. In response, Iran has launched missile strikes on the Kurdish region. The Kurdish region has denied the presence of foreign “strategic centers” and allegations of involvement in attacks on Iran. Iran also claims that Iraq-based Kurdish groups are involved in fomenting unrest in Iranian border cities with the support of foreign actors. Israel is often implicated in these claims, but both Erbil and Israel deny the allegations.
