Israeli Flag-Raising Ceremony in Ottawa Cancelled Due to Security Concerns

City officials have decided to cancel a flag-raising ceremony at Ottawa City Hall in honor of the establishment of Israel due to security concerns.

Although the flag will still be raised on May 14, the planned ceremony with the mayor, diplomats, and members of the Jewish community will not take place.

The city cites intelligence suggesting that the event could pose a significant risk to public safety, without providing specific details.

Ottawa 4 Palestine had announced plans to protest at the event on social media.

Deborah Lyons, Canada’s envoy for combating antisemitism, has criticized the decision to cancel the event, emphasizing that Jewish Canadians should not be restricted from participating in public events.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed disappointment in the decision, attributing it to “escalating threats and hostility” in a post on social media.
