Israeli Police Detain 3 Individuals for Firing Flares at Netanyahu’s Residence
Israeli police have detained three individuals for firing two flares at the private residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday. The incident took place in Caesarea, where nobody was present to be harmed by the flares. The suspects, identified as prominent members of an anti-government movement, were apprehended and their identities remain undisclosed due to a court order.
The flares landed in the property’s garden, prompting an investigation that led to the joint interrogation of the suspects by police and Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency. This incident follows ongoing political disagreements and protests in the country related to Netanyahu’s governmental reforms and handling of security matters.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the attack, emphasizing the need to avoid public violence escalation. Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar described the incident as a dangerous escalation and assured that law enforcement will not tolerate such actions. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also condemned the incident, stating that threats against the Prime Minister cannot be tolerated.
Despite calls from authorities to hold the suspects in custody for 12 days, the Magistrate’s Court ordered a five-day detention. Opposition member Benny Gantz labeled the incident as terrorism, emphasizing the importance of lawful dissent against the government. Last month, Hezbollah conducted a drone attack on the prime minister’s residence, adding to security concerns in the region.
No group has claimed responsibility for the recent flare incident, and investigations are ongoing. Reuters contributed to this information.
