Israeli Rabbi Found Dead in UAE after Going Missing, 3 Suspects in Custody

DUBAI/JERUSALEM—Three individuals have been detained in the United Arab Emirates in relation to the alleged homicide of an Israeli national, as confirmed by the Emirati interior ministry on Sunday.

The statement from the ministry did not provide specifics regarding the suspects or whether they have been formally charged. However, it emphasized the utilization of all legal resources to swiftly address any actions that jeopardize societal stability.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the killing of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, 28, as a “heinous antisemitic terrorist act” and pledged to pursue justice for the perpetrators.

Kogan, a resident of the UAE and also a Moldovan citizen, was affiliated with the Orthodox Jewish Chabad movement based in New York. He was reported missing on Thursday and his remains were discovered on Sunday.

The Israeli foreign ministry disclosed that various Israeli agencies are collaborating on the investigation. It is believed that Kogan was last seen at a Kosher supermarket in Dubai.

Kogan’s body was found in Al Ain, an Emirati city bordering Oman. The circumstances of his death, however, remain unclear, as former Israeli politician Ayoob Kara informed Reuters in Dubai.

Ayoob Kara, a member of Israel’s Likud party, indicated potential Iranian involvement in the investigation. The Iranian embassy in the UAE swiftly denied any connection to the victim’s murder.

Israel advised its citizens to limit travel to the UAE and exercise caution in public spaces associated with Israel and Jewish communities.

UAE Jewish Community in ‘Shock’

Since the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, Israel’s presence in the UAE has increased significantly. Despite the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, the UAE has maintained its diplomatic ties with Israel.

Following the tragic events of October 7, 2023, members of the Jewish community in the UAE expressed shock at Rabbi Kogan’s death. Nevertheless, they reiterated their commitment to strengthening relationships and investments in the region.

Formal synagogues in Dubai remain closed as a precautionary measure, with congregants opting for home prayers. The lone government-sanctioned synagogue in Abu Dhabi continues to operate.

Although official figures are unavailable, estimates suggest there are several thousand Israelis and Jews residing in the UAE.
