Jaime Battiste withdraws from Liberal leadership race
Nova Scotia Liberal MP Jaime Battiste announces his withdrawal from the Liberal party leadership race and declares his support for former central banker Mark Carney.
In a statement released by his campaign late Thursday, the MP for Sydney—Victoria made his decision public.
Battiste, the sole Indigenous candidate in the race, aimed to prioritize First Nations issues throughout the competition.
He believes that endorsing Carney’s leadership bid is the most effective way for him to advance his key concerns—reconciliation, the environment, and affordability.
Five candidates are still in the running, including Liberal MPs Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould, as well as former MPs Frank Baylis and Ruby Dhalla.
The Liberals will select their next leader on March 9.
