Joly Urges Israeli Counterpart to Choose Diplomacy over Military Action with Iran
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is calling on Israel to de-escalate the growing conflicts in the Middle East and refrain from bombing Iran in retaliation for Sunday’s thwarted airstrikes.
Ms. Joly advised Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz to “take the win” of preventing Iranian airstrikes and to avoid launching a direct attack on Iran.
For years, Israel and Iran have been engaged in a proxy war, with Israel accusing Tehran of supporting groups like Hezbollah and Hamas in their attacks on Israel.
Many believe that Israel was responsible for the April 1 airstrike on Iran’s embassy in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of senior military officers.
Following this incident, Iran carried out its first-ever military assault on Israel on Sunday, using hundreds of drones and missiles reportedly aimed at military infrastructure.
Ms. Joly plans to discuss the possibility of imposing more sanctions on Iran during this week’s meeting with other foreign ministers in the G7 group of like-minded nations.
