Jordan Peterson relocates to the United States
Jordan Peterson has made the decision to relocate to the United States due to the perceived benefits of living there and the challenges he currently faces in Canada.
The University of Toronto psychology professor emeritus and author shared this news during his daughter Mikhaila Peterson’s podcast on December 10. She welcomed him by saying, “Welcome to moving to America, formally.”
Peterson, known for advocating free speech, highlighted the advantages of residing in Florida, where he is currently located.
“I like where I’m living, a lot,” he mentioned to Mikhaila. “It’s close to you, we have lots of work to do.”
He also mentioned facing challenges related to his profession’s regulatory body and political pressures.
Although not actively seeing patients, Peterson faced disciplinary action from the College of Psychologists and Behavioural Analysts of Ontario for his online comments. The college ordered him to undergo social media training or risk losing his license due to public complaints about his remarks.
Peterson challenged the college’s decision by filing for a judicial review, asserting his right to free speech. However, the courts dismissed his application, prompting him to consider the mandated social media training. The college failed to initiate the training by the November deadline.
In an op-ed for the National Post on October 11, Peterson speculated that the delay in training could be due to his warning on social media. He expressed frustration with the situation, calling it “very annoying to say the least.” The college did not respond to requests for comment.
Peterson voiced concerns about Canada’s proposed Online Harms Act, labeling it as a potential threat to free speech rights. He emphasized his unease with the current political landscape and tax policies in Canada.
As opposition mounts against the Online Harms Act, the Liberal government announced plans to split the bill into two parts to prioritize combating child exploitation. The government intends to address the free speech aspects of the legislation at a later stage.
Peterson also addressed his strained relationship with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who accused him of being funded by Russian media to destabilize democracies. Peterson hinted at potential legal action to address the allegation.
Feeling increasingly isolated in his Toronto neighborhood, Peterson noted the welcoming environment in Florida where he is collaborating with his daughter on various projects.
