Kremlin Warns of Direct Confrontation in Russia-NATO Relations
Moscow’s warning coincides with the 75th anniversary of the transatlantic alliance’s foundation.
Relations between Russia and the United States-led NATO alliance have worsened to the point of “direct confrontation,” as Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov cautioned.
Peskov stated that NATO is involved in the Ukraine conflict and is continuing to encroach on Russian borders while expanding its military infrastructure.
During a press briefing on April 4, he mentioned that Moscow’s relationship with NATO has now reached a state of direct confrontation.
This statement from the spokesman coincided with the 75th anniversary of the transatlantic alliance’s founding in Washington on April 4, 1949.
With headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, NATO now has 32 members following the recent addition of Finland and Sweden.
In early 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, which is not a NATO member, with the objective of safeguarding Russian speakers in the eastern Donbas region.
Seven months later, Moscow effectively took control of four regions in southern and eastern Ukraine, considering them part of the Russian Federation.
Kyiv and its Western allies have criticized Russia’s invasion as an unlawful and unprovoked land grab that is ongoing.
