Kristy Grows Stronger, Upgraded to Hurricane in Eastern Pacific Ocean
Kristy has strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean and is expected to stay far away from land as it continues to gain power, according to forecasters. The storm is currently located 590 miles west-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, moving west at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, as reported by the National Hurricane Center based in Miami.
Having formed as a tropical storm on Monday off the southern Pacific coast of Mexico, Kristy has since intensified into a Category 1 hurricane. It is anticipated to rapidly increase in strength and could reach Category 3 status before weakening later this week, forecasters predict.
The hurricane is projected to remain over open waters and poses no threat to land. There are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect for any nearby areas.
In the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Oscar has weakened into tropical remnants after hitting Cuba as a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday. The island is currently dealing with aftermath of flooding and power outages.
