Labour pledges to outlaw no-fault evictions as part of rental reform agenda
Angela Rayner, the Deputy party leader, stated that renters will benefit from Labour’s policies, promising more legal protections for renters and increased home construction.
If Labour wins the general election, they have confirmed plans to ban non-fault evictions and implement other measures to support renters.
Rayner emphasized that Labour will prioritize renters, promising an immediate ban on no-fault evictions, an end to rental bidding wars, legal protections for tenants living in substandard conditions, and the construction of 1.5 million homes on poor quality land.
Additionally, Labour aims to reduce energy bills and fuel poverty by requiring landlords to meet energy efficiency standards by 2030.
The Renters Reform Bill faced delays due to the addition of amendments before being passed by MPs in May.
The government has been criticized for watering down the legislation, particularly with regards to no-fault evictions, which were due to be banned under the bill.
Rayner accused the Tories of failing renters and pledged that Labour will prioritize them over the next decade.
The campaign group Renters’ Reform Coalition welcomed Labour’s commitments but emphasized the need for more details on how the policies will be implemented.
Rents rose by 6.6 percent in the past year, according to Zoopla’s Rental Market Report for June.
