Lambie Saves the Day as Tasmania Finds Itself 1 MP Away from Forming a Government
The Jacqui Lambie Network is set to provide confidence and supply to the Tasmanian Liberals, raising concerns about the cost of their support.
After 19 days of uncertainty, Tasmania is close to having a stable government following the announcement of a deal between The Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN) and the Tasmanian Liberals, ensuring the continuation of the Rockliff government.
The Liberals fell short of the total seats needed to govern on election night, with 14 seats in total. The agreement with JLN leaves them just one MP away from securing a majority.
Lambie’s new MPs—Miriam Beswick (Braddon), Andrew Jenner (Lyons), and Rebekah Pentland (Bass)—have committed to offering parliamentary confidence and supply to the Liberals. This means they will support the government on critical motions and budget bills, allowing the government to function effectively.
However, the signed agreement also requires them to support the government on specific motions that limit the government’s actions, restricting their ability to dissent on certain issues.
If they must vote against the government on matters other than confidence and supply, they are mandated to provide notice the day before, a requirement that Liberal MPs do not have when crossing the floor.
Unlike a traditional coalition, the Lambie MPs remain outside the government, which further limits their influence despite the agreement.
While they have secured some concessions in exchange for their support, such as a strengthening of the Integrity Commission and political donation reform, these concessions are non-binding, leaving room for government flexibility in delivering on their commitments.
Critics have denounced the deal, claiming that the JLN gave up too much for too little. Independent MP Lara Alexander and others expressed skepticism and stated they would have rejected a similar offer.
Despite criticism, Premier Jeremy Rockliff defended the agreement, emphasizing the stability and certainty it provides for the Tasmanian parliament. He highlighted the transparency and additional resources brought by JLN to improve governance.
Mr. Rockliff swiftly appointed his new Cabinet, with newly elected House of Assembly MPs Eric Abetz and Jane Howlett taking on significant portfolios.
Mr. Abetz will oversee business, industry, resources, and transport, along with leading the House, while Ms. Howlett will handle primary industries, water, and racing.
Mr. Rockliff praised their extensive ministerial experience and readiness to serve when parliament reconvenes in May.
The Liberals secured 14 seats in the election, with Labor holding 10, Greens 5, JLN 3, and 3 independents.
