Lawsuit filed against Maple Leaf by Canada Bread owner for suspected bread price-fixing
Grupo Bimbo, the owner of Canada Bread, is suing Maple Leaf Foods for over $2 billion, alleging that it deceived the company regarding its participation in an alleged bread price-fixing scheme.
The legal action follows a previous lawsuit filed by Maple Leaf against Grupo Bimbo, which was the majority shareholder of Canada Bread until 2014.
Canada Bread contends that Maple Leaf should be held responsible for its involvement in the purported conspiracy, which is also the subject of two class-action suits and an ongoing Competition Bureau inquiry.
In its lawsuit, Grupo Bimbo claims that Maple Leaf induced Canada Bread to participate in the alleged scheme and intentionally kept information about it from Grupo Bimbo during the acquisition process.
On the other hand, Maple Leaf is counter-suing Grupo Bimbo for defamation, asserting that the accusations of being aware of or complicit in the conspiracy are baseless.
None of the allegations have been tried in court, and both companies refute each other’s claims.
