Lawyer gets another chance to win secure seat thanks to support from labor
A local candidate who was previously replaced by a senior minister has been reselected by Labor to reclaim a former safe seat.
Labor has chosen lawyer Tu Le to run for the seat of Fowler in Sydney’s southwest in the upcoming federal election.
Le was initially a frontrunner for the seat in the 2022 election but was pushed aside to make way for former New South Wales (NSW) premier Kristina Keneally.
This decision faced criticism as Keneally was not from the electorate but from Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
As a result, Labor experienced a significant swing against it, losing the seat to independent candidate Dai Le with a slim 1.6 percent margin.
This was the first time Labor had lost Fowler since its establishment in 1984.
Tu Le, the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, has worked as a community lawyer supporting survivors of domestic violence.
“Having grown up in southwest Sydney as the daughter of refugees, I have a deep understanding of equal opportunities and overcoming disadvantages,” she stated on Oct. 4.
“My personal experiences have driven me to advocate for the community’s needs… the people of Fowler deserve representation in the Labor government.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Tu Le as a fitting community representative.
“Tu Le is an outstanding candidate and will serve as a great local member, ensuring a voice in government and achieving results,” he expressed.
“My government strongly supports multiculturalism, and I have a strong connection to this community. Tu Le will be a remarkable advocate.”
The next election is scheduled to take place by May 2025.
