Liberal Leadership Candidate Gould Proposes Increasing Corporate Taxes and Reducing GST

Liberal leadership candidate Karina Gould has announced plans to reduce the GST by one percentage point to four percent for a year, aiming to provide tax relief for struggling Canadians.

Gould made this announcement at a campaign event held at an independent bookshop in Ottawa today. Alongside this proposal, she also pledged to raise the corporate tax rate from 15 to 17 percent for businesses with annual profits exceeding $500 million.

Having resigned from her position as House leader to pursue the leadership role, Gould is competing against five other candidates in the race to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The voting process will conclude on March 9.

The other candidates in the running include former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste, and former MPs Ruby Dhalla and Frank Baylis.

Baylis, a Montreal entrepreneur, is commencing his campaign with an event in the city tonight.

To remain in the race, candidates must submit a payment of $50,000 to the party by today, with increasing payments required to cover the $350,000 entrance fee by February 17.
