Liberal MP Resigns from Politics Due to Unacceptable Behavior, Threats, and Gender Discrimination
Liberal MP Pam Damoff has announced that she will not seek re-election in the upcoming federal election. She cited experiencing misogyny, disrespectful dialogue in politics, and threats to her life as reasons for her decision.
Ms. Damoff expressed pride in her time in politics but stated that it is no longer the right path for her, signaling a new chapter in her life. She has represented Oakville North-Burlington, a riding west of Toronto, since 2015.
Her planned exit was revealed through a letter posted on her Facebook page. She lamented the current state of politics being driven by a desire for social media attention and likes, highlighting a drastic change in how politicians engage with each other and the public.
Ms. Damoff raised concerns about the deteriorating tone of political discourse, pointing out that misinformation and lies spread by politicians are eroding trust in institutions. She expressed worries about the impact of these trends on society.
“Unfortunately, the toxic drive for social-media likes and clips among elected officials has hindered constructive conversations, exacerbated difference between us, and diminished our capacity to show empathy towards each other,” Ms. Damoff said in the statement.
“The threats and misogyny I have experienced as a member of Parliament are such that I often fear going out in public, and that is not a sustainable or healthy way to live.”
