Liberal MPs Convene for the First Time Following Trudeau’s Resignation Announcement
Liberal MPs are meeting in Ottawa today for the first time since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he will step down.
The national caucus meeting, set to take place both in person and online, was originally scheduled to last six hours to allow MPs to discuss Trudeau’s previous refusal to resign.
Now, the focus will be on the next steps for the party as it embarks on a national search for a leader who can compete with popular Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
Some members of the party caucus, including cabinet ministers Jonathan Wilkinson, Steven MacKinnon, and Karina Gould, are exploring potential leadership bids after receiving calls from party rank-and-file members.
On the other hand, Chrystia Freeland, Anita Anand, and Francois-Philippe Champagne are gauging support from other MPs and party members for their own potential bids.
Top Liberal officials are also meeting behind closed doors throughout the week.
