Liberals Criticize Beijing Video for Promoting Aggression Towards Australia
The release of a video by Beijing depicting a confrontation between its jet and an Australian plane has sparked outrage among the Liberals.
While Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the Business Council of Australia’s annual dinner, emphasizing efforts to repair relations with Beijing, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) released a provocative video showcasing a 2022 encounter between an Australian P-8 Poseidon and a Chinese J-16 fighter.
The Defence Department acknowledged the video’s existence but did not confirm its authenticity.
Albanese informed business leaders that improving ties with China has removed nearly $20 billion in barriers for Australian farmers, producers, and miners.
Beijing’s actions came shortly after Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Australia, symbolizing a normalization of diplomatic relations.
The video captures a conflict over the South China Sea where a People’s Liberation Army aircraft flew close to the RAAF plane, discharged flares, maneuvered in front, and released “chaff,” causing aluminum debris to enter the P-8’s engine.
Amidst the footage, the J-16 pilot expressed defiance towards the perceived enemy and emphasized bravery in combat.
“Unacceptable Conduct”: Opposition
Coalition Foreign Affairs spokesperson Simon Birmingham denounced the video as showcasing unacceptable military behavior and urged the government to display strength in handling Beijing.
Birmingham highlighted concerns over risky and aggressive Chinese military conduct, emphasizing the need to address such behavior responsibly.
He criticized the video for glorifying hostile actions and describing Australia as an enemy, stressing the importance of a respectful relationship with China.
Referring to previous instances of Chinese military aggression, Birmingham emphasized the necessity for a more assertive stance towards Beijing.
The Coalition emphasized the importance of peaceful and stable relations but called for accountability in addressing provocative military conduct.
Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie expressed concern over the lack of trust between Australia and Beijing, citing the PLA video as evidence of unfriendly behavior.
The Australian Defence Force reiterated its commitment to freedom of navigation in accordance with international laws.
