Man Accused of Performing Nazi Salute in Sydney Faces Charges
On Monday at 8:45 a.m., police responded to a shopping center following reports of an individual making an offensive gesture.
A 54-year-old man appeared in a Sydney court on January 13 for allegedly performing a Nazi salute in Balmain.
The incident took place at a shopping center near Darling and Beattie Street, where the man was caught making a Nazi salute.
He was arrested and charged with various offenses, including displaying a Nazi symbol, making a Nazi salute in public, resisting police, and behaving offensively.
The man has been denied bail.

The event in Balmain is part of a trend where individuals have been charged for displaying Nazi symbols or performing Nazi salutes in public, especially after recent anti-Semitic incidents.
In November 2024, a man was arrested for a similar offense in Newtown.
Additionally, construction workers were fined for performing Nazi salutes outside the Sydney Jewish Museum.
NSW Premier Chris Minns condemned the display of Nazi symbols, emphasizing their lack of place in modern society.
The government has pledged increased security funding for the Jewish community, a move supported by local leaders.
Laws have been introduced in NSW and other states to prohibit the public display of Nazi symbols and gestures.
Community Calls for Stronger Action Against Anti-Semitic Acts
Recent anti-Semitic incidents, such as the defacement of the Newtown Synagogue with swastika symbols, have sparked widespread condemnation.
NSW Police have mobilized the anti-terrorism task force to address the rising threat of hate crimes against the Jewish community.
The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies voiced concerns over community safety, particularly after the recent synagogue incident which they labeled a “failed act of terrorism.”
They condemned the attack for endangering both the place of worship and local residents.
