Man Charged with Crashing Bus into Quebec Daycare, Causing the Death of 2 Children Appears in Court Again

The individual accused of causing the deaths of two children and injuring six others in a tragedy involving a transit bus crashing into a daycare center in the Montreal area is appearing in Superior Court today.

Both the prosecution and the defense are set to argue at the Laval, Quebec courthouse that he should not be held criminally responsible for his actions.

In February, Prosecutor Karine Dalphond informed the court that both sides would present their case jointly, as two separate experts concluded that due to a mental disorder, Pierre Ny St-Amand should not be held criminally responsible.

Following the incident on February 8, 2023, where the 53-year-old man was driving a city bus that crashed into a daycare in Laval resulting in the death of a four-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, Ny St-Amand faces charges of second-degree murder, assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm concerning the other children involved.

The trial is anticipated to span several days and will involve a comprehensive review of the facts, as well as expert psychiatric testimonies.

The proceedings will be overseen by Superior Court Justice Eric Downs, who will ultimately determine Ny St-Amand’s criminal accountability.
