Man Dies in Severe Plane Turbulence, Eight Australians Hospitalized
Singapore Airlines expressed condolences to a man who tragically died during severe turbulence on a flight from London.
A British grandfather has passed away, and eight Australians have been hospitalized following severe turbulence encountered on a Singapore Airlines flight on May 21.
Singapore Airlines verified that Flight SQ321 from London to Singapore experienced severe turbulence en route, leading to a diversion to Bangkok after a medical emergency was declared by the pilot.
Eighteen passengers were taken to the hospital, while the remaining passengers and crew underwent evaluation and treatment.
The airline stated that the flight encountered “sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin” at an altitude of 37,000 feet, about 10 hours into the flight.
A total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members were onboard the flight.
Among the passengers on the Boeing 777-300ER were 56 Australians, along with individuals from various countries including New Zealand, Europe, Asia, the US, and the Middle East.
“Singapore Airlines extends our heartfelt sympathies,” the airline stated in a social media post.
“We deeply regret the distressing ordeal experienced by both our passengers and crew members on this flight. We are offering all necessary support during this challenging period.”
Footage captured by passengers and shared online depicted the plane’s interior in disarray, with parts of the ceiling loose and items scattered around the cabin.
The video also captured passengers screaming as the plane shook violently.
Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil confirmed that eight Australians were receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
“This is a harrowing incident that these individuals have endured. The Australian government stands ready to provide consular aid wherever it is required to those affected,” she told the Sunrise program.
