Managing Director of ABC to Step Down

David Anderson, the managing director of Australia’s national broadcaster, will be stepping down from his position after facing a vote of no confidence from unionised staff.

The managing director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), David Anderson, has announced his decision to step down from his role leading the national news service.

Anderson, who assumed the position in 2019, is expected to continue in his role until 2025, when a new managing director will take over.

In January, unionised staff at the ABC passed a vote of no confidence in Anderson for failing to protect the ABC’s integrity and its employees from external attacks.

Despite this claim, the ABC board unanimously expressed confidence in his leadership.

Prior to becoming managing director in May 2019, Anderson served as the director of entertainment and specialist programming.

Last year in August, Anderson’s contract was renewed for another five years by the ABC.

In an email to ABC staff, Anderson shared his decision-making process to resign from his position at the broadcaster.

“I am still deeply committed to the ABC’s importance to the nation,” as reported by ABC.

“I believe it is the right time for a new leader to continue the ABC’s growth,” Anderson expressed.

He added, “Leading such a dedicated and talented team across Australia and internationally for almost six years has been a privilege.”

“Being part of the ABC community has truly been an honor. We all play a role in upholding this significant national institution that has served Australians for over 90 years.”

The appointment of the new managing director will likely be decided by ABC Chair Kim Williams.

Williams, the former chief executive of News Limited who succeeded Ita Buttrose in March, expressed his deep respect for Anderson following the announcement.

“My respect and admiration for David’s dedication to the ABC remains unwavering. His commitment to public service and the corporation is exemplary,” he stated.

ABC News Director Justin Stevens also praised Anderson, noting his ability to bring stability to the broadcaster during a period of disruption and transition.

Having worked in the television broadcast industry for over 30 years, Anderson first joined the ABC in 1989.
